Zurich [ZURZN.VX] has announced a recovery in profits, and hinted that there are further improvements to come. Zurich has big ambitions in the UK personal general insurance market, however the success of this strategy will depend on the performance of the broker channel - a risky strategy given the latter's declining revenues last year.

Zurich's performance vindicates a wide-reaching restructuring program that entailed the loss of thousands of jobs and the disposal of a raft of non-core activities. The insurer has sharpened its focus on its most profitable insurance lines and is on course to achieve its year-end profit target.

Zurich's [ZURZn.VX] $1 billion bond issue comes hot on the heels of a similar move by Aviva last week. Zurich is seeking to consolidate after an over ambitious expansion program, but it needs to remember that a full recovery in the UK life insurance sector is still some way off.

The agreement between Zurich UK Life and Legal & General will benefit consumers with smaller pension pots who may not have access to the Open Market Option, allowing them to take advantage of an annuity rate from either provider. However, there is still a consumer knowledge gap regarding the Open Market Option, and little scope for less affluent consumers to gain access to financial advice.

Zurich has failed in its attempt to have an entire third-party liability claim thrown out due to a significant fraudulent component. The UK Supreme Court found that the fraud was not "exceptional" enough to take this action and ordered Zurich to honor the non-fraudulent portion of the claim. This is a blow to insurers' efforts to discourage fraudulent claims and reduce costs.

Once seen as one of the world's strongest companies, Zurich Financial has been forced into a desperate share issue and job cuts by mistaken acquisitions and poor risk assessment. Although its short-term future looks volatile, there's strong growth set for insurance market that will help Zurich and its competitors in the long term.

The UK has been one of the strongest performing regions for Zurich's general insurance business, with solid increases in both premium income and profits. Nevertheless, with soft-market conditions returning to the property sector, it will be a real challenge for Zurich to maintain focus on its return on equity goal.

Zurich has launched its high net worth division, Zurich Private Client. The HNW market has stimulated a lot of interest recently, and Zurich hopes the insurance venture will help it move into further HNW services in the future. Its already large over-60 and high-income customer base suggests Zurich has a high potential for success in this market.

An online exchange called Zopa has been launched that enables members to borrow or lend up to GBP25,000 from peers rather than using a traditional bank or building society. Building on the eBay concept, the website is a market for lending which provides investors with higher returns and borrowers with preferential rates to those offered on the high street. However, the concept may be a tough sell.

Over the past few years, Zimmer [ZMH] has demonstrated even higher growth than the impressive rates seen in the overall orthopaedic market, and is now set to become even stronger with the addition of Centerpulse. The company will take market leadership position in joint reconstruction and become the fifth largest player in the lucrative sector of spinal implants.
