A bankruptcy court has declined a request from Centrica to shield the UK utility from Enron-related liabilities, resulting in the New Power deal being called off. While New Power does not believe its association with Enron will prevent other deals, time is running out for the US utility.

The Enbridge deal doubles Centrica's Canadian customer base, bringing the company towards its target of ten million North American customers by the end of 2003. The timescale may look tight, but Centrica stands a good chance of achieving it. And as retail competition kicks off, the utility should be able to replicate its successful UK model of providing multiple services.

Centrica's march towards its goal of 10 million customers in North America by 2004 continues with the acquisition of Alberta's leading gas and electricity retailer, ATCO. Meanwhile, the refinancing of subsidiary Enbridge Services means more funds for further acquisitions, but the slower than expected pace of deregulation is making organic growth that little bit harder.<BR />

Although Centrica has shown strong UK growth in its core businesses, there's big potential for longer-term growth if the UK water market opens up. Meanwhile, the company should focus on the US, where consumers may be more responsive to its key business objective of 'bundled propositions'.

NewPower's share price has fallen sharply since Enron's demise, and its financial woes could make it a good low-cost addition to Centrica's North American portfolio. The UK utility would gain around 900,000 customers for a bargain price: especially gratifying after making previous pricier acquisitions across the Atlantic.

Despite the collapse of its New Power deal, Centrica is on target to acquire 10 million customers in North America by 2004. By acquiring 850,000 customers from AEP, the company will gain significant scale in one of the US' most competitive retail markets and raise its overall base to 4.5 million customers.

China has long been criticized for its use of coal, which fuels 68% of its energy needs. Despite efforts to curb this dependence, including closing over 550 coal power stations in 2007, the country still has a long way to go. Matters have been made worse by recent results which show that the country missed its emissions target for Q1 2010. Surprisingly, however, the US may come to China's aid.

China is boosting its energy investments, driven by an ever-increasing need for energy resources. The US is emerging as a favorite destination for Chinese investment, particularly in the unconventional oil and gas domain, with China National Offshore Oil Corporation's acquisition of a 33.3% stake in Chesapeake's Niobrara shale project the second major deal conducted in the last four months.
