Recent media coverage of the social unrest in Tunisia, Egypt, and Libya has referred to a "Middle Eastern crisis." However, these important oil producing nations are firmly African. The oversight is indicative of a broader media tendency to ignore similar problems taking place across Africa, where a number of elections throughout 2011 could further threaten the continent's oil and gas production.

It's COP time again, and the world will resume its yearly chant about the need to address climate change. The baby steps taken in Copenhagen at the COP15 will be the focus of attention as most developed nations push to make these into more binding agreements. With electricity demand beginning to outstrip supply in South Africa, the government has been forced to look for alternative ways to boost capacity. Although this project is an urgent response to crippling power shortages that are posing a real threat to the industries on which the country is so dependent, the proposal has attracted criticism, especially from environmentalists.

EDF's plans to invest and partner in new build nuclear capacity projects around the world are a judicious move given its status as one of the world's leading nuclear power players. However, the attractions and prospects in its four target markets vary considerably.

Developments at this month's World Summit in South Africa have left the US as the victor. No global targets or timetables were set for renewable energy; the EU and developing countries have been left to set their own. The only concrete targets the US has agreed are for sanitation. Unsurprisingly, environmentalists have been left smarting.
