The EU and Russia's only common ground on energy policy is that Europe wants the gas Russia has, but that is not enough to ensure security of supply in Europe's energy-starved future. Centrica is feeling the heat

Centrica's recent Annual General Meeting has highlighted two key issues potentially acting to the detriment of the company. With customer losses continuing, and an admission that it is unlikely to be able to freeze 2005 retail prices as planned, Centrica's moves to mitigate its exposure to the wholesale market look both expedient and necessary. Centrica ups its upstream

Centrica's recent acquisition of stakes in four North Sea gas fields is very much in line with its strategy of reducing wholesale market exposure. The significant exposure mitigation resulting from the deal will be a key facet of the company's attempt to win back some of the 1.4 million customers lost since early 2004 and highlights the need for other utilities to do likewise.

Centrica: more to come from Morecambe

Centrica's plans to drill another well at a Morecambe field come as little surprise given its stated intention, and overwhelming need, to reduce wholesale market exposure. Despite drilling costs, the decision makes sound economic sense and will help efforts to head off further price increases and resultant customer losses.

Centrica: pipes from the East

Centrica has reportedly indicated that it would consider buying some of Russia's export pipelines, should they become available. This may signal a strategic move behind the scenes by the British government to bolster bilateral negotiations with Moscow, rather than working through EU channels.

Centrica: UK gas storage projects in jeopardy

Centrica Storage has announced that it may abandon plans for two proposed gas storage facilities if the UK government fails to subsidize the GBP1.5 billion projects. While low storage capacity remains a threat to UK energy security, the austerity of the public spending cuts means that government aid will be limited for the foreseeable future.

China's CNOOC to buy half of Argentine oil firm

Chinese oil companies have been spreading their influence across global O&G reserves, and estimates that Chinese oil consumption will grow by 3.9% during 2010-15, while oil production will grow by a meager 1.0% over the same period, clearly demonstrate the country's reliance on imported hydrocarbons. As a result, it is expected that China will continue to aggressively secure resources globally.
