The global drive to improve the environmental profile of energy production continues, and the UAE has the potential to be a leader in this area, partly due to its natural geographical advantages. While no immediate changes can be expected, it is likely that nuclear and renewable power will play a significantly greater role in the federation's energy production activities over the longer term.

A growing number of eco-awards are being won by process heat recovery systems. The Aqua-Society, for example, won the 2010 German Sustainability Award for its production of electricity from low-pressure waste steam at temperatures as low as 70 degrees Celsius. While such capabilities could help popularize the technology, it remains to be seen whether it can match the success of wind and solar.

The EU, which has missed its 2010 renewable energy target by 75%, is turning towards North Africa for sustainable energy sources. The DESERTEC project, a E400 billion scheme to fund the construction of solar panels in the Saharan desert, is expected to contribute 15% of total EU power demand by 2050. If the project succeeds, the global approach to the supply of energy may be reconsidered.
