GlaxoSmithKline: H1N1 hype unfounded as UK caps vaccine order

Following poor uptake of the vaccine in several European markets, the UK Department of Health has opted to limit its H1N1 contract with GlaxoSmithKline to 34.8 million doses. Despite the media hype surrounding the influenza outbreak, the mild course of the pandemic and negative public opinion of the vaccine means that its commercial impact will be significantly reduced.

The UK's new GBP600m cancer drug fund raises postcode lottery concerns

Despite the limited growth set out for the NHS budget in the government's spending review, the DoH has confirmed that the GBP200m annual cancer drug fund will be available from April 2011 to 2014, when value-based pricing is set to be applied. Over this period, however, regional bodies are to decide how this money will be spent, leading to fears that this will result in more postcode prescribing.
