Disappointing results from its department stores means that the group is likely to concentrate on the cosmetics sister to The Perfume Shop that is currently being trialed as well as the further expansion of its Perfume Shop chain.<BR />

John Lewis indicated that sales had surged in the past five weeks, providing hope that Christmas trading may be better than last year. The company's sales last week rose by 5.8 % to GBP62 million against a year ago. While the performance must be encouraging for John Lewis, its rivals must still be hopeful that the Christmas spirit cold weather engenders will drive consumers into the shops.

Debenhams is considering a return to the stock market with a price tag of GBP3 billion, with sources suggesting an announcement could come as soon as February. Christmas shoppers heading for London's West End will enjoy a little respite from petrol fumes and overcrowded pavements on December 17, when Oxford Street closes to traffic. Despite fears of a slowdown in sales on Britain's high streets, the British Retail Consortium has reported that total retail sales in December 2005 were 6% up on the year before, the best result for any month since May 2004. However these figures should be treated with some caution as they do not account for the myriad exceptional factors influencing Christmas trading this year.

House of Fraser has announced strong sales growth over the festive period, outstripping market expectations. However, while the recent growth in like-for-like sales demonstrates a marked turnaround on figures reported earlier in the year, it may not be enough to salvage the group's 2005 performance.

For the last five years John Lewis has been putting its house in order. Company restructuring, store revamps and a product overhaul have drastically updated the image of the business and ensured a devoted following of shoppers. It is therefore unsurprising that the company can no longer see a place in its stable for Caleys of Windsor, one of the UK's oldest department stores.
