Government changes could aid Lloyd's of London/Berkshire Hathaway deal

The UK government has proposed legal changes to allow investors in Lloyd's of London to transfer their liabilities to Berkshire Hathaway. This is good news for both Berkshire Hathaway, which stands to profit from the news, and Lloyd's, which should be able to improve its image via the deal. However, Lloyd's still has hurdles to clear, especially amid competition from Bermuda.

IFAs' positive outlook under threat

IFAs are expected to remain the most influential distribution channel for life and pensions products in the UK, handling two thirds of sales in 2006, but there are clouds on the horizon. Increased competition, resistance to new technology, lack of communication between advisors and providers, and an inefficient business model all suggest that the industry must adapt to survive in the long-term.

The forthcoming national pensions savings scheme (NPSS), with its auto-enrolment feature, may help protect some, but consumers must be pro-active in saving themselves.

Standard Life: float vote is just end of beginning

Standard Life's plans for demutualization were overwhelmingly welcomed by its members with 98% of voters favoring flotation. However, recent stock market trends have cast a shadow on the demutualization process which could affect windfalls. Indeed the vote to float may only be the first of a number of hurdles the insurer faces, among them the possibility that it could become a takeover target.

UK retirement reform: 'stealth tax' charge ignores wider benefits of change

The opposition Conservatives believe that the planned incorporation of the UK's State Second Pension into a more generous basic state pension amounts to an additional tax on middle earners. Yet taking this one element of a wider reform package that will overhaul the entire retirement provision system in the UK is arguably somewhat over-simplistic.
