St1: shaking up the Scandinavian service station market

St1 has revived competition in the Scandinavian service station market with the acquisition of 198 sites. By the end of 2009 Datamonitor predicts that St1 will have a 6% volume share in Sweden and a 4% volume share in Norway, but making further inroads will be tough.

Forecourt retailing: bottled water is liquid gold for service stations

In Norway, the NRK Brennpunkt documentary program has highlighted the extent to which sales of bottled water have become highly lucrative for a number of retail channels, including petrol stations. However, as large stocks of bottled water can take up a significant proportion of shops' display space, fuel retailers need to think of ways in which they can best utilize the room at their disposal.

The news that DSGi is expanding its largely out-of-town presence in Norway is a significant development. A chain of small shopping center stores would provide the retailer with a new revenue stream, but would also present some familiar challenges.
