When Corus was formed in 1999, it hoped to grow by diversifying from steel - but a corporate rethink has overturned these plans. Not only is the firm now spinning off its non-steel businesses, it's merging with Brazil's CSN, thereby guaranteeing ore supplies. It's not clear that heavy exposure to a rickety economy is the best way of hedging commodity price risk, however.

Losing $900 million on the sale of 11 Dutch power stations looks like a very bad deal, but it is not in this case. Reliant bought at the peak of the market and overcapacity has depressed asset values across Europe over the last year or so. A price of $370/kW is about right for current market conditions.

Scandal-ridden Ahold can't afford any more nasty surprises, so it's focusing on mature markets. For a healthier firm, however, Ahold's South American businesses are a strong opportunity. Emerging markets specialist Tesco understandably decided in March not to buy out the struggling Dutch company - but its Brazilian unit could be another story.

Baan is among a batch of companies that Invensys has put up for sale. Invensys now wants to focus on production management after a dismal financial performance in weakening trading conditions. While Baan is likely to sell for a fairly low price in the current market, Invensys will finally be able to concentrate its attentions elsewhere.

Invensys will be pleased to get rid of loss-making ERP vendor Baan, but it won't be pleased by the price if current rumors are to be believed. There is still a chance of a higher bid, but Baan's low value customers and limited technology won't attract anything high enough to match Invensys' original investment.

SDL has announced that it is to acquire web content management vendor Tridion, in a move that will see the company's products combine to allow organizations to manage the delivery of all information in local languages to a global audience using the web. This should provide SDL with a real competitive advantage, as well as raising its profile in the market.
