Elan/Biogen Idec: Tysabri sees further safety success

Elan and Biogen Idec can breathe a little easier having announced the second round of positive results about the safety of their multiple sclerosis drug Tysabri. These results, which come less than a year after the voluntary withdrawal of the drug from the US market following the death of two patients from a fatal brain disorder, suggest a promising future could still be possible for Tysabri.

Elan/AHP: allying to improve sleepy Sonata sales

The agreement gives AHP access to Elan's drug development expertise in an attempt to revive Sonata, which has so far performed disappointingly. Elan should profit from obtaining a share of the drug's existing revenues and increasing its US sales presence. Such mutual benefits will strengthen the existing relationship between Elan and AHP.

Chevron: looking to leave the Irish market?

Chevron is believed to be in negotiations with the UK's largest independent fuel retailer, Malthurst Fuels, to sell part of its Texaco branded service station network in Ireland. After reporting a loss in 2008, it is possible that Chevron, along with ExxonMobil, the only other oil major left in the country, could follow Shell and Statoil's decision to exit the Irish market altogether.

Cider appears to be undergoing something of a renaissance, as illustrated by C&C's strong financial results, which were buoyed by sales of its Magners and Bulmers brands. However, while the premiumization of C&C's cider offerings has contributed to the company's success in Ireland, it may still be some time before the UK market accepts the category as a valid alternative to wine and spirits.

BT/mmO2: reinvigorated after the breakup

BT and mmO2 will hope the split draws a veil over the company's dire performance over the last few years. But while the prospects for the newly demerged divisions do seem a little stronger, the management still has a great deal to prove. And despite rumors that the new companies will be taken over, any such deals look some time away.

British Airways: going down with a red face

BA has lost its top-flight status by dropping out of the FTSE 100. While the news is bad enough for the group, low cost airline Ryanair's decision to issue a statement saying it was applying to take their place was worse still. Since the Irish airline is not eligible to join the FTSE 100, the aim of its statement is clear - to further humiliate its archrival.
