RWE: tightening its grip on the German water market

RWE is increasing its overall stake in the water company to 74.9%. This cements the company's drive to grow its water supply business, adding 1 million customers to its existing 12 million water customers in Germany. However, building the German water business is not RWE's only expansion priority.

RWE: shelling out for Thyssengas

Having seen its major rival E.On acquire Ruhrgas earlier in 2003, RWE is now becoming 100% owner of Thyssengas. Like E.On's takeover of Ruhrgas, this move strengthens RWE's position through the entire natural gas chain, and offers opportunities for synergies in network management, procurement and administration.

RWE: power prices boost figures

RWE benefited from a welcome rise in power prices in H1, with its electricity business recording earnings growth of 46%. However, while the core businesses fared well, non-core businesses moved in the opposite direction with a 46% decline. The key for RWE now is to consolidate its new acquisitions or the company may well find itself lagging behind major rival, E.ON.

RWE: paying for innovation

Looking at the value of Innogy's assets given the poor conditions in the UK market, RWE is paying far too much. However, it is notoriously hard to put a price on innovation and experience. RWE hopes the acquisition will allow it to apply Innogy's competitive market skills to its German operations. If it is right, the premium will be more than covered.

RWE: one last splash in the water market

After a spending spree in the last two years that has cost the company GBP14 billion, the company is eyeing one final acquisition before a hiatus to consolidate other recent purchases. To complete its Ruhrgas takeover, E.ON is required to sell Gelsenwasser, and RWE is keen to add the firm to its burgeoning water company portfolio.

RWE: keeping the pressure on E.ON/Ruhrgas

RWE outbid both E.ON and Ruhrgas to acquire a 97% stake in Transgas. The German utility will also take majority stakes in six of the eight regional Czech gas distributors. This not only makes the company a one major player in the transit of gas from Russia to western Europe, but also one of the most important foreign investors in the central European energy market.
