Despite trading conditions remaining tough, Hermes posted an 8.5% increase in revenue in 2009 due to extremely strong growth in the Asia Pacific region and its resilient product proposition, which caters well for current consumer trends. A continued focus on extending its store estate and lessening dependence on wholesale will see the retailer through what is expected to be another difficult year.

Much of Inditex's recent sales growth has been achieved through aggressive store expansion: the clothing retailer had 3,245 stores at the end of Q1, up 15.6% on the same date a year ago. More than 80% of these stores are in the EU and the retailer still has much potential for further growth in the region.

Mango is expanding its menswear concept, following successful trials in a selection of its stores since March 2008, and has opened its first store under the new HE fascia. The Spanish clothing retailer is focusing on a multi-format strategy to drive growth in these woeful times, and its extensive international expansion and experience abroad provide a solid platform for developing new concepts.

New Look chief executive Phil Wrigley says there will now be a second phase of trials of New Look stores outside the UK. New Look already operates the 228-strong Mim chain in France, and the retailer is examining how the two chains could work alongside each other. This cautious expansion plan should generate further growth prospects in the future.

PPR's strategy to focus on its fastest growing market segments is paying off, as the group reported double digit growth in its luxury goods business. The fashion ranges remain a core sales driver for high revenue lines of accessories and fragrances unlike at P&G which has just closed its Rochas fashion business.

With sales of E20.2 billion, 2008 looks like the last good year before the global crisis starts to affect sales at French giant PPR. Electricals and furniture sales have already been impacted by the slowdown in mature markets, and luxury will not prove immune to the downturn. As a result, PPR is positioning itself to survive difficult conditions in 2009.

Strong results leave French retail group PPR well placed to exploit its new structure and make further gains in profitability, while top line growth also looks highly achievable. However, with four main luxury goods brands and four retail businesses, maintaining momentum across the group will be difficult.

Printemps, one of France's largest department store chains, plans a luxury makeover for its flagship Boulevard Haussmann store in Paris in order to target super rich tourists. Although the revamp will take years to complete, the move is the first towards premiumization of the department store chain and could open the door for a series of pan-European luxury department stores.
