In its first set of full year results since its de-merger from GUS last October, Home Retail Group has reported an improved performance at both its Argos and Homebase arms, with group sales up by 6.4% and operating profit ahead by 8.3%. In the short term, the prospects for both fascias are favorable, but, in the longer term, the company will need to look further afield for growth.

Despite an 11% sales order uplift, sofa company ScS has issued its second profit warning in three months, as operating profit fell 58% in the six months to March 31. Furniture is often one of the first sectors to feel the impact of consumers cutting back their discretionary spending, and the bleak current trading environment will test the strength of furniture retailers throughout 2007.

Alongside last year's financial results, furniture specialist DFS revealed a 5% rise in like-for-like sales for its current financial year. This is a solid performance in challenging market conditions and the retailer seems well placed to continue outperforming key rivals ScS and Land of Leather.

For the 52 weeks to 28 April, 2007, Carpetright's sales rose by 5.4%, while profits increased by 5.1%. The retailer continues to grow sales in a declining domestic market, while its fledgling European operations represent a good opportunity for future growth.

Homewares specialist Dunelm Group has posted a 12.5% rise in total sales during the 52 weeks to June 30, while like-for-like sales were ahead by 6.1%. However, going forward, Dunelm will have a number of issues to deal with - ranging from weaker consumer demand to greater competition from non-specialists - which could potentially suppress its healthy margin.
