Two months after being acquired by private equity group Sun Capital Partners for an undisclosed sum, HomeForm's management has unveiled plans to overhaul its stores and deliver operational efficiencies, in a bid to rebuild the fitted home improvement specialist's profitability. Such actions are urgently needed if HomeForm is to prosper in an intensely competitive market.

Homebase has ramped up its social media strategy in a bid to drive sales amid tough market conditions; however, Verdict believes that its strategy is actually a step backward from its earlier innovations. While social media can be used to drive sales, the retailer's decision not to integrate its social media activities into its transactional website is a missed opportunity.

UK home and general merchandise retailer Home Retail Group has announced that, for the 18 weeks to January 3, 2009, like-for-like sales at its Argos and Homebase subsidiaries declined by 7.5% and 10.2%, respectively. These poor results are further evidence of the negative impact that the current economic climate is having on consumer confidence and thus discretionary spend.

Home Retail Group has released its interim results for the six months to September 1, 2007 and has much to be proud about, with Argos sales up 4.7% and Homebase extending its appeal with new product ranges and more aspirational store environments. However, with competition growing across its core markets, Homebase in particular will need to run just to stay still.

The Home Retail Group has announced a deterioration of sales at Argos, and a slightly improved but still disappointing performance at Homebase. This leaves the group relying heavily on what is expected to be a challenging final quarter in order to make a profit. However, its financial strength and tight cost control should leave it well positioned to meet profit expectations.

Home Retail Group has announced that Argos and Homebase increased total sales by 2.5% and 2.9%, respectively, in the 13 weeks to August 29, 2009. Despite this growth, Verdict believes that these results do not paint a true picture of how both retailers are performing, and that the true litmus test will be how they perform over the next six months.

Home Retail Group, owner of Argos and Homebase, has reported a pre-tax loss of GBP437m for the 26 weeks to August 30, after taking an exceptional charge of GBP549m related chiefly to a write-down in Homebase's value. With the group particularly exposed to the housing market downturn and facing increasing competition from Asda and Tesco, trading conditions are set to become even more challenging.

In its first set of full year results since its de-merger from GUS last October, Home Retail Group has reported an improved performance at both its Argos and Homebase arms, with group sales up by 6.4% and operating profit ahead by 8.3%. In the short term, the prospects for both fascias are favorable, but, in the longer term, the company will need to look further afield for growth.

The Home Retail Group has announced a cautious set of results, with a set of robust figures from Argos undermined by disappointing sales at Homebase and the threat of rising costs. In the short-term at least, the group hinted that it expects things to get worse before they get better, pointing to an underperformance in the second half of last year as a warning for the future.

Hermes has reported a resilient performance in the first quarter of 2009, with sales up 3.2% to E428.4 million. Turnover was driven by sales of leather goods, especially in Asia, while favorable currency effects helped to further boost revenue. However, a weaker performance in other product categories and softening demand in Europe pose problems for the future.
