Carpetright: weak competition aids growth

Carpetright's total UK and Ireland sales were ahead 5.9% in what continues to be a challenging market. Despite external pressures, Carpetright has grown market share and continues to aggressively open new store space ahead of rivals. The improving UK housing market should also drive growth in both sales and margins.

Carpetright: sales hit by downturn

Carpetright, the UK's leading carpet specialist, saw total group sales decline by 6.7% and UK like-for-like sales fall by 15.1% for the 25 weeks to April 25, 2009. Although diminishing revenues in the furniture and floorcovering sector persisted into the first few months of 2009, and it struggled to maintain sales in the UK, Carpetright's business in its Rest of Europe segment has seen growth.

Carpetright: rent relief

Carpetright's admission that rental inflation is beginning to slow is good news for the retailer but it does not necessarily mean that all retailers are likely to experience the same trend during the coming months. The majority of Carpetright's stores are located in bulky goods retail parks and it is here that that rental cost inflation is likely to slow, and not on prime retail park sites.

Carpetright: reluctant to leave familiar ground

Floor coverings specialist Carpetright has acquired UK retailer Carpetworld for GBP7.2 million, adding a further 13 stores to its portfolio. Additionally, in a slightly more exploratory move, the firm has completed the purchase of 11 stores in southern Holland from Dutch retailer Ben de Graaff Tapjit for E8.0 million.

Carpetright: progress on all fronts

For the 52 weeks to 28 April, 2007, Carpetright's sales rose by 5.4%, while profits increased by 5.1%. The retailer continues to grow sales in a declining domestic market, while its fledgling European operations represent a good opportunity for future growth.

Carpetright: positive outlook despite a challenging market

The carpet market dipped 10% last year and full-year results from Carpetright showed like-for-like sales down 2.8% last year. However, the retailer has a positive outlook for the rest of the year as performance in the second half picked up and outlined plans to expand to Europe.

Carpetright: laying the foundations for future growth

Carpetright has announced that like-for-like sales in the UK and Ireland for the five weeks to January 31, 2009 were down just 2.9%, with total sales, including the recently acquired Sleepright, up 7.9%. Carpetright's post-Christmas performance was better than expected, and the retailer is in a strong position to take advantage of capacity falling out of the market.

Carpetright: firing on all cylinders

Although the retailer saw operating expenditure increase, due largely to the costs associated with new store openings, improvements to the gross margin were more than enough to compensate and underlying operating profit rose 16.7%. Carpetright has an optimistic outlook - a position it is well justified in given the raft of opportunity ahead.

Carpetright: covering new ground

Carpetright has reported a 0.2% gain in underlying sales in the first 13 weeks of its second half, which included the Christmas 2005 period. While this sales growth would not normally be grounds for celebration, the results represent something of a return to form for Carpetright and should aid the company in its international expansion plans.

Carpetright: aggressive physical expansion drives growth

Despite flat like-for-like growth, Carpetright continues to dominate the UK floorcoverings market. However, with the floorcoverings market forecast to grow just 0.9% in 2007 and store saturation on the distant horizon, Carpetright will need to target international expansion more aggressively if it is to continue its relentless pursuit of growth.
