Metro Group: another record year

Germany's Metro Group had a bumper year in 2007, achieving annual sales growth of 10.0% to reach E65.9 billion. Organic sales growth, excluding the Wal-Mart and Geant acquisitions, came in at 7.1%. Following patterns of recent years, the retailer shows a polarized performance in its various markets, and, domestically, a shake up of the portfolio could be on the cards.

Metro's Galeria Kaufhof divestment could not have come at a worse time

Metro Group has hired JP Morgan to advise on the sale of its department store chain, but while a divestment makes good business sense, it is not necessarily a desirable proposition for apparent suitors, such as major deparment store player, Karstadt, or private equity companies. Current financial conditions, and questions regarding the suitability of the properties, will make the sale difficult.

More woes for Arcandor

Just as it was announced that the German economy had emerged from the severest recession since the 1930s, the fate of Arcandor was sealed as it became one of the biggest insolvencies in the corporate history of the country. The Arcandor fallout will lead to job losses, which will add to the country's growing unemployment and, as this impacts consumer confidence, retailing is in for a tough time.

New Look: furthering its French foray

New Look chief executive Phil Wrigley says there will now be a second phase of trials of New Look stores outside the UK. New Look already operates the 228-strong Mim chain in France, and the retailer is examining how the two chains could work alongside each other. The sector returned to growth in 2006 following two years of decline, and has not only sustained this trend for the second consecutive year in 2007, but is likely to outperform in 2008.
