Novartis/Chiron: a promising cash injection

Novartis has finally satisfied Chiron's board after raising its takeover bid for the firm. This is good, if unsurprising, news for Novartis, as Chiron offers the Swiss drug maker growth opportunities in vaccines and biopharmaceuticals. Indeed, despite its recent woes, Chiron should be a good buy, enabling Novartis to become a key player in the increasingly important vaccine market.

Novartis: cardio refocus should reward

Novartis has terminated the development of its pipeline 'super-statin' NKS104 after concluding that it would not be competitive enough to warrant further investment. While this will reduce Novartis' already sparse late-stage cardiovascular pipeline, the move comes as no surprise, especially given the uncertain outlook for the branded statins market, and the growing popularity of non-statin drugs.

AstraZeneca on the acquisition trail

UK drug manufacturer AstraZeneca ended 2005 on a high note, making four significant acquisitions in December. This spending spree comprised the acquisition of product rights for one phase III drug and two phase II products, alongside the purchase of UK-based biotech firm KuDOS Pharmaceuticals. With these purchases, AstraZeneca aims to bolster its pipeline in both the short and long term.

AstraZeneca's Symbicort gives asthma patients the power to get SMART

AstraZeneca's SMART is an experimental new regimen for its leading asthma drug Symbicort. A successful approval of this regimen may provide a major incentive to switch patients from GlaxoSmithKline's Seretide and keep new rivals at bay. However, recent labeling changes proposed by the FDA have significant implications for the possibility of future US approvals of variable dosing regimes.

Biogenerics: the battle is only just beginning

Biogenerics - also known as biosimilars or follow-on protein products - are set to become the next big battleground between branded pharma and the generics industry. Biological therapeutics such as epoetin are currently huge money-spinners for big pharma and unsurprisingly, generics players want a slice of the action.

Novartis: Prexige launches in the UK

More than two years since its initial approval, Novartis' COX-2 anti-inflammatory Prexige has been launched in the UK. Backed by leading British research and positive data from a number of recent clinical trials, the drug should experience a good uptake in the UK, which will no doubt be reflected across Europe when it hits continental markets this year.

Sanofi-Aventis: strong sales before generics gloom

Thanks to Plavix sales and new vaccines launches, Sanofi-Aventis has been able to report impressive sales at a time when big pharma is generally experiencing minimal revenue growth. However, although more product launches are expected this year, with generic competition set to increase Sanofi-Aventis is unlikely to report such encouraging results for 2006 or 2007.

Bayer: cardiovascular concerns could run deep

Chiron: rising from the ashes

After a troubling few years, Chiron has posted strong fourth-quarter 2005 sales and profits, driven by the recommencement of Fluvirin sales. These impressive results have boosted the company's share price and gone some way towards restoring confidence, which took a big knock in October 2004 when UK authorities suspended the company's flu vaccine license.

Novartis/Idenix: entering hepatitis B market

Novartis and Idenix have filed for EU approval of telbivudine in chronic hepatitis B. A European launch would mark Novartis'/Idenix' entry into the chronic hepatitis B market, although, in the long term, the companies are likely to target the Asian market, especially China. However, China's problematic healthcare system and the inability of many patients to afford drugs could impede penetration.
