According to reports in the Japanese media, DaimlerChrysler [DCX.F] is to make a $6.67 billion capital injection into Mitsubishi Motors [7211.TO]. It is also reportedly planning to raise its stake in Mitsubishi Motors to more than 50% in the next two years. Following much negative publicity regarding vehicle defect cover-ups in recent years, Mitsubishi is once again in the limelight because of problems with its vehicles. In the short term this is the last thing the embattled carmaker needs, but if it wants to restore its sullied reputation, and honest and proactive approach to vehicle safety is the right attitude to have.

Mitsubishi: trying to keep things ticking over

Mitsubishi Motors' [7211.T] freshly selected CEO, Yoichiro Okazaki, now has to find a rescue plan for the company and make it work. The company should focus on repairing its damaged reputation and prioritize the quality of its vehicles. Motorists in China respond to Jaguar Land Rover's premium positioning

As a result of increased demand, primarily in the Far East, JLR is set to create 800 new jobs, whereas Honda is due to cut the same number of positions. The latter's new focus on fuel-efficient cars in North America should help it to weather the storm, while JLR ought to stick with its current successful tactics.
