Verizon Wireless: expanding into the country

Verizon has been facing medium-term capacity difficulties after the collapse of the US spectrum auction last year. Buying several local operators from Dobson should help to compensate for this. The more acquisitions Verizon makes, the less likely it will be to run out of bandwidth before any new auctions take place.

Sprint: mobiles run ahead

Most of the loss came from Sprint's FON landline division, which also saw falling revenues due to overcapacity. The PCS mobile unit, meanwhile, increased its revenues by 42%. Verizon: enough capacity, for now

The news is welcome, given the collapse of last year's US spectrum auction. However, two years may not be enough time. It may be forced into alliances with other carriers.

Motorola: bad results, but getting better

The figure, in line with expectations, reflects last year's collapse in many of Motorola's major markets. The restructuring process that began last year (which has already brought positive results in mobile handsets), combined with recoveries in some infrastructure markets, should bring a far better 2002. The semiconductor unit's future, however, looks bleak.
