In a bid to bolster its goal of becoming a major European gas hub, Turkey has entered into a deal worth around GBP1.75 billion with Iran, through which it will help to develop the region's massive South Pars gas field. Despite opposition to the deal on political grounds, the agreement will help to secure European energy supplies as alliances with Russia become increasingly risky.

Nabucco faces many difficulties, most significantly soaring construction costs and sourcing the gas. However, the EU ETS has the potential to make the project economically viable. Furthermore, Turkmenistan is showing signs of commitment to supply the pipeline, and although improved Western-Iranian relations are not on the horizon, Iran should be considered a viable supply solution in the long run.

The recent announcement by 15 gas-exporting states, including six of the world's top 10, revealing that they are to form a permanent organization intended to stabilize prices and monitor markets does not indicate that an OPEC-style gas cartel is any closer to becoming a reality. Political pressure from Washington has, to a certain degree, motivated some of the world's largest oil traders to stop supplying gasoline to Iran in recent months. As a result, the crude-rich but gasoline-short country is looking for alternative supply partners such as China, a shift that has the potential to reshape the long-term international oil and gas political scene.

With the signing of the gas pipeline agreement between Iran and Pakistan, India must now decide whether or not to pursue the proposed Iran-Pakistan-India pipeline. India has already voiced a great deal of skepticism over the viability of the proposal, and alternative sources such as domestic gas production or nuclear energy could both prove to be more reliable and cost-effective solutions.

Iran's alleged nuclear activities have led the US and EU to impose new tougher sanctions on the country and its energy sector in a bid to cripple its oil-dependent economy. However, the Iranian energy sector is likely to find enough support from China to fill both the supply and demand gaps left by Western companies that have exited the market.

Each day, thousands of barrels of crude oil and refined products cross the border into Iran from Iraq, primarily from the semi-autonomous region of Kurdistan. The proceeds from this trade are vital to the post-Saddam reconstruction of Kurdistan, and are equally as important for Iran, where the refining industry is struggling to produce enough fuel to meet the country's rapidly growing demand.
