While home energy management systems are a useful way of reducing energy use, with benefits for consumers and utilities alike, the adoption of this technology is likely to be hampered by a number of factors including concerns over privacy and a lack of return on investment. As a result, uptake is likely to be optional and driven by sophisticated users and utilities struggling to meet peak demands.

Natural gas is a vital element of the UK's energy mix but production peaked in 1999 and there are concerns that the country is now becoming over-reliant on foreign gas. Production is in rapid decline but the availability of additional sources, particularly from Libya, could reduce market volatility and push prices down, which would be beneficial for importers.

At Copenhagen, the world will look to China and the US to overcome economic and political hurdles and set the agenda for a meaningful global climate effort. However, with China unwilling to commit to hard emissions targets and the US unlikely to overcome its zero-sum mindset suspicious of burden-sharing, Datamonitor examines a third, albeit equally contentious, 'carrots and sticks' approach.

At the Copenhagen Climate Change Conference, Europe's negotiating position will be to retain and develop the Kyoto Protocol and the EU Emissions Trading Scheme free market mechanism. Although the EU will seek to leverage this together with other operational and well established mechanisms to achieve its emissions reduction targets, Copenhagen will not deliver caps and floors for the carbon price.

Irrespective of the political and economic conclusions reached at the Copenhagen Climate Change Conference, energy marketing will take a subtle change of direction once the summit is over, with strong elements of social media entering the traditional marketing mix of both B2B and B2C energy. As a result, energy companies will need to learn the tricks of the trade of social media.

The decision by ExxonMobil to buy shale gas producer XTO and shift its strategic focus towards gas reflects an increased global emphasis on environmental impact and technological advances to expand recoverable reserves. While these trends are likely to continue, key issues like economic uncertainty and the debate surrounding long-term oil-indexed gas contracts will be the central drivers in 2010.
