V&S Group: cutting through the clutter

After experiencing phenomenal growth during the early days, manufacturers' and consumers' enthusiasm for the RTD market has since waned, especially in recognition of growing market clutter. However, the V&S Group's focus on taste and image in designing Absolut Cut should ensure a positive reception, particularly in Europe.

SABMiller: Harbin bid hoo-hah

Anheuser-Busch's [BUD] surprise acquisition of a 29% stake in the Chinese brewer Harbin may force SABMiller [SAB.L] to gain full control of the company. By making this competitive acquisition, however, Anheuser-Busch is risking its strategic alliance with the number one Chinese brewer, Tsingtao.

SABMiller: Czech out Frisco

Leading Czech brewer Plzensky Prazdroj is broadening its horizons with a new low-alcoholic ready-to-drink beverage. This is a move away from the company's core beer producing activity, though it could well be a prosperous move since the RTD sector remains largely untapped in the Czech Republic.

SABMiller / Anheuser-Busch: see you in court?

SABMiller [SAB.L] may be backing down a little in its fight against Anheuser-Busch's [BUD] marketing, but dropping the case altogether could be less than ideal for both sides. The legal battle has made interesting news, and increased media coverage has resulted in greater consumer awareness of both brands. This may conceivably boost sales of both of their beers.

It may yet need to form a partnership with a larger rival to compete in an increasingly consolidated beer market.

Scottish & Newcastle: optimistic over off-trade recovery

Having come through a crisis period for brewers as supermarkets squeezed prices, Scottish & Newcastle [SCTN.L] can look ahead with confidence if signs of a recovery in the off-trade prove well founded. If S&N can grow off-trade margins, it stands to benefit from a growing trend among consumers to drink at home.

SAB: rugby defeat no barrier to rebranding

The loss of the rugby sponsorship comes just days after South African Breweries unveiled a major corporate rebranding exercise. The brewer is keen to stress its South African heritage, and will be sponsoring the 'Great South Africans' television program to reinforce this message. It should prove a shrewd move, compensating effectively for its rugby defeat.
