Brits are the biggest bingers, but the heavy session is on its way out

Although Britons remain Europe's biggest binge drinkers, people throughout Europe are cutting down on their consumption of alcoholic drinks outside of the home. The compulsory banning of smoking in UK pubs, however, will make venues more attractive to fast-growing consumer groups, such as women, and this could serve to benefit traders in the long term. Budvar: living in perfect harmony

Budejovicky Budvar and Anheuser-Busch [BUD] have long argued over which brewer has the right to market 'Budweiser' beer. Spurred on by its recent success in the UK courts, the smaller Czech brewer is going on the offensive with a new marketing campaign. However, it is seeking to target a different sort of drinker than Anheuser-Busch's regular Bud drinker.

Budweiser: new-look cans unlikely to reverse falling sales

The brewer has released a new - and seemingly more modern - Budweiser can design in an attempt to attract younger consumers and in doing so counter declining brand sales. However, against a backdrop of acute consumer price consciousness and shifting category taste preferences, it is doubtful that the redesign will have any significant, long-term impact on overall brand sales.

Budweiser: raising a glass to another new market

Budweiser is set to launch in Vietnam, following Anheuser Busch's export deal with local brewer Gannon. The deal highlights Anheuser's strategy of making further investments in foreign markets, particularly in the Asia Pacific region, following weak growth in the US. This initiative should prove beneficial to the company, due to the Vietnamese market's growth potential.

Anheuser-Busch has lost its latest case against long running rival Budejovicky Budvar over the use of the Budweiser brand name. The European court's ruling that Anheuser-Busch should not have rights to the brand throughout the EU is a blow to the US firm but a positive for Budvar, which has gained good publicity over the years from its Bud battles.

C&C: pioneering the cider revival?

Cider appears to be undergoing something of a renaissance, as illustrated by C&C's strong financial results, which were buoyed by sales of its Magners and Bulmers brands. However, while the premiumization of C&C's cider offerings has contributed to the company's success in Ireland, it may still be some time before the UK market accepts the category as a valid alternative to wine and spirits.

Cariboo Genuine Draft: success with a low-cost beer

In the month since its release, Pacific Western Brewery's Cariboo Genuine Draft has achieved strong sales in the Canadian beer market, by offering a low price point without the associations of a vastly inferior taste. Alcohol preferences generally stand up to recessionary conditions, which suggests that the success of Cariboo Genuine Draft is not purely down to its price.
