Tower Records: crumbling under the competition

US music & video retailer Tower Records has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection for the second time in two years. MTS, the owner of Tower Records, has estimated debts of $89 million and continued competition from grocers and the internet makes the chain's future look bleak.

WH Smith: preparing for split

Smiths News and new WH Smith shares will both commence trading on Friday, September 1, following the decision to separate the two businesses. WH Smith: focus must switch from cost saving to sales growth

In its first set of results since demerging its news and distribution arm, WH Smith has reported profits up by almost a third in the year to August 31, despite sales slipping from GBP1.41 billion to GBP1.34 billion over the period. While the company deserves credit for delivering a substantial improvement in gross and operating margins, it still needs to prove that it can restore sales growth.
