Alexon's new CEO has presented the group's interim results for the first half of the year to July 2008. The dismal performance included sales down 5.3% and operating profit down 39.6%. However, with a new, female CEO who can identify with the customer and has relevant experience, the company should now be able to exploit a sizeable market opportunity.

With sales figures for Bhs included for the first time, The Arcadia Group has reported a solid set of results for 2009/10. Topshop and Topman are once again the star performers. With the focus still very much on driving profits, Verdict Research believes that there are further gains to be made in 2010/11.

German group Arcandor's financial struggles have led to talks with Berlin regarding a state bailout, resulting in strong criticism from both politicians and retailers. As an alternative, rival Metro is proposing a takeover of Arcandor's Karstadt department store chain. Although both solutions could undermine competition in the market, the latter may rescue the struggling retailer in the long term.

While unconfirmed at present, it looks increasingly likely that Arcandor will not receive the necessary state guarantees for its outstanding debt. The company needs to raise E960m for 2009, with up to E900m to follow over the next five years. By June 12, when outstanding credit has to be renewed, Arcandor, the holding company of Karstadt, Thomas Cook and Quelle, could enter insolvency.

Germany-based retail and travel company Arcandor saw its financial position deteriorate in the quarter to December 31, 2008 as costs accumulated due to restructuring work at Thomas Cook and its mail order arm saw losses of E58m (group EBIT). Although the sales performance of department store Karstadt has stabilized, Verdict Research is skeptical as to whether this signals a sustainable turnaround.

Online fashion retailer ASOS has posted impressive sales growth for FY2011, with international shipping up 141.8% year-on-year. Australian sales were especially strong, which has encouraged the retailer to set up a dedicated site for the market in 2011-12. ASOS is one of many foreign retailers looking to Australia to increase online sales due to their ability to undercut domestic retailers.

Baltika, one of the leading clothing retailers in the Baltic States, has signed an agreement with the German department store chain Peek&Cloppenburg which will see the German retailer sell its Mosaic clothing line. The deal is the first step towards Baltika's Western European expansion, and could pave the way for its own store development in the region.

Speculation that the Icelandic owner of House of Fraser may bid for Debenhams is provoking many questions about how Baugur would run the two competing retailers. Certainly many challenges exist, such as formulating a truly differentiated positioning. However, Baugur has extensive experience of managing overlapping brand portfolios and no doubt has clear ideas about its potential profitability.

Icelandic investment group Baugur has fallen into administration, casting doubts on the future ownership of much of the UK high street. While there are likely to be opportunities for rival investors and retailers to pick up stakes in some highly covetable assets - other fascias will prove much harder to sell.
