Sears Holdings: predicting weak Q2 results

Sears Holdings has forecast a decline in second quarter sales and profits. Kmart and Sears stores, the group's domestic divisions, produced negative like-for-like sales for the quarter ended August 4, 2007. The group also expects net income for the quarter will fall short of forecasts and be considerably lower than 2006. Going forward, Sears faces challenges growing both topline sales and profit.

Kingfisher: looking for Indian partner

DIY retail group Kingfisher is reported to have held informal talks with Reliance about opening stores in India as a joint venture. However, it is thought that Kingfisher has rejected the opportunity, because it was unhappy with the terms of the deal offered by Reliance. If the retailers manage to iron out an agreeable deal, this could be an excellent move for Kingfisher.

HRG: spreading the risk

Kingfisher: the going will get tough

For the first half of 2007, DIY retail group Kingfisher has reported overall like-for-like sales growth of 4.3% to GBP4.8 billion, while UK like-for-likes were considerably weaker at 1.9%, reaching GBP2.3 billion. Despite improvements to its retail brand B&Q, a wet UK summer has negatively affected sales. However, its efforts to gain market share are set to pay off once the market bounces back.
