SuperGen: a new Orathecin partner needed

There is exceptionally high unmet need in the colorectal cancer market, so SuperGen's phase III cytotoxic Orathecin, scheduled for launch next year, should bring significant revenues. However, SuperGen needs to find a new marketing partner for the drug. Without full support in the EU and co-marketing help in the US, Orathecin will not achieve its potential.

Stem cell research: Europe seizes the advantage

The House of Lords committee was set up to review the ethical implications of allowing human embryonic cloning for research into degenerative diseases. Despite fierce campaigning by 'pro-life' groups, it came out in favor. Particularly after the recent restrictions imposed in the US, a 'reverse brain drain' of investment from the US to Europe could be on the cards.

Statins: patient cholesterol levels impact safety

According to new observational analysis, early statin use after acute coronary syndrome is beneficial in patients with high cholesterol levels - but the effects may be harmful in patients with low cholesterol levels. The timing of Sony's announcement has fueled speculation the PS3 may launch as early as 2004. This could force Microsoft to bring its Xbox 2 forward, and would also increase the PlayStation's penetration into general living room entertainment.

The Finnish telco is the first national network to move from legacy systems to an IP-based network for voice traffic. Although others in the industry will be watching like hawks for signs of problems with the system's technological and commercial viability, most of the issues that once dogged voice over IP networks have now been resolved. Sonera's move should be a success.

Solvay/Biovail: too little, too late for Teveten

Although Solvay/Biovail's Teveten (eprosartan) has demonstrated benefits in isolated systolic hypertension, Solvay has been reluctant to file for this indication. The results of the most recent trial may well be too little too late now that Teveten's major competitors, such as Diovan (valsartan), are also targeting this indication.

SMS messaging: coming to America

SMS has been a cash cow for European operators, as well as boosting mobile phone use and preparing people for advanced mobile messaging services. It has proved less popular in North America, partly because technological problems have prevented interconnection until now. The deal will boost SMS in Canada, and could well encourage US operators to follow suit.
