Barclays: easy does it

With the public's appetite for borrowing apparently unquenchable, Barclays' reported performance appears a model of prudence. The UK bank's Q1 performance, although solid, was uninspiring. The massive sales push that inflated wholesalers' stocks in Q4 2001 has hit 2002 sales hard; so has generic competition for three key drugs. The most serious concern at this time is whether there is any source for a sales recovery.
