Data released by the British Beer & Pub Association in October 2010 show that beer sales in the three months to the end of September were down by 10% compared to the same period last year. This is the worst quarterly rate of decline since the association's records began. Evidently consumers are still harboring a recessionary mindset, which is affecting even affordable luxuries such as beer.

Standard Life Wealth is to initiate various strategies in order to help it with its planned expansion drive. These include halving its threshold to GBP500,000, and headhunting staff from competitors to man its new regional offices, the first of which is to be opened in Birmingham. This is a shrewd move, considering the new office will have over 11,000 potential new clients in its catchment area.

The German Renewable Act has successfully increased renewable energy capacity from 6% of total generation capacity in 2000 to 16% in 2009. However, in order to compensate for higher demand, lower wholesale prices and last year's levy deficit, German consumers will have to foot a bill of E13.5 billion in 2011. This should be a warning to other countries of the immediate costs of such policies.

The British government has issued a proposal that will limit tax relief on pensions to contributions of GBP50,000 per year, a sharp decrease from the current annual allowance of GBP255,000. The change is likely to dissuade the wealthy from saving for a pension, making it essential for providers and advisors to encourage consumers to regularly review their financial position ahead of retirement.

Petrobras has raised $70 billion through a share offering, making it the fourth biggest company by market capitalization in the world. Although the deal provides the company with much-need capital, there is an undercurrent of anxiety among investors over the fact that the Brazilian government now owns almost half of the company, as this may well pose a challenge to its future productivity.

After two years of consultation, Ofgem has finalized its new network regulation model. RIIO will replace RPI-X, which for 20 years has served Britain well in keeping network charges low and encouraging investment. However, as the government tries to reduce carbon emissions and increase renewable energy capacity, Britain's existing grid infrastructure is in need of a significant overhaul.

On October 1, 2010, the taxation levied on fuel in the UK will increase by 1p to 58.19p per liter for petrol and diesel, pushing the cost of fuel ever closer to prices experienced in 2008. While such a price hike may negatively affect both motorists and sales of petrol- and diesel-driven cars, it could prove beneficial to makers of hybrid-electric vehicles.

For Whyte & Mackay, gaining the distribution rights for a brand in the fast-growing and lucrative golden rum segment will complement other areas of its spirits brand portfolio. Furthermore, this deal should offer a growth opportunity for Cockspur Rum, allowing it to compete in a segment where only a handful of key brands play.
