ABN Amro Capital's sale of its German portfolio to its management team could be seen as a little hasty. True, the German market is a tough one to operate in but, given ABN Amro's [ABN] size and resources, the group should instead have recruited an exceptional management team to access upcoming market opportunities.

Wealth manager ABN Amro [ABN] struggled in 2003, but it has worked on its domestic business and reaped the rewards. Its Private Client arm in particular has improved significantly on last year. With the right strategy ABN Amro should now be well placed to make inroads into the tough German market.

Allianz has set up a board-level committee tasked with ecological and social responsibility, becoming the first company globally to do so. Consumers want to see this type of demonstration of social responsibility by their financial services providers, as it highlights considerations wider than profitability. Consumers may also seek out providers with values that align with their own beliefs.

Although the industry continues to mock Allianz's purchase of Dresdner Bank, the German insurer begs to differ. Yes, the investment and corporate banking business is struggling - but the real value in the takeover lies in increased distribution for Allianz's insurance products, and the opportunity to grow retail market share as investors seek security.

Allianz [ALV.F], Europe's largest insurer, has announced its interim results. It has seen a 3.9% rise in net premium income, driven in part by a strong performance in its property and casualty division. But while Allianz has certainly made progress, it will need to continue making improvements to win back the confidence of its investors.

Allianz is currently considering further restructuring to accommodate Dresdner Wasserstein Perella, but it looks like it might rather sell this ailing investment bank. The current plan is to shake up the company and give Dresdner Wasserstein Perella more freedom, but further depression of M&A activity could put Allianz under pressure to sell.
