A storm is brewing in the East despite temporary gas truce

The January 2006 Russia-Ukraine gas deal has been temporarily extended to the autumn; a temporary truce largely driven by Russia's position as chair of the G8. There are two events on the horizon with potentially serious implications for the reliability of gas supplies to Europe: Yulia Tymoshenko's appointment as Ukrainian prime minister, and Turkmenistan's decision to hike gas prices to Russia.

Centrica: pipes from the East

Centrica has reportedly indicated that it would consider buying some of Russia's export pipelines, should they become available. This may signal a strategic move behind the scenes by the British government to bolster bilateral negotiations with Moscow, rather than working through EU channels.

Changes afoot in Russian electricity and gas markets

Following the fall of the Soviet Union, the Russian economy slumped and the demand for electricity and gas plummeted. While demand has revived during the economic recovery that began in the late 1990s, the years of neglect have affected the infrastructure of the Russian power industry to the point that without private investment, a lack of capacity may place a cap on further economic growth.

Crunch time for Nabucco

Turkish prime minister Tayyip Recep Erdogan delivered a pointed message to European energy markets on a three-day visit to Brussels last week, stating that, if talks on Turkey's accession to the EU remain blocked: "we would of course review our position". This was Ankara 'playing the energy card', and demonstrated how developments through 2008 have changed Europe's energy outlook.

Energy demand in 'BRIC' continues to grow - no end in sight

It has long been acknowledged that the commercial opportunities in the so called 'BRIC' markets - Brazil, Russia, India and China - remain significant for energy players. European energy security: Ukraine-Russia gas deal poses long term questions

A compromise deal has been struck that will see Ukraine paying twice as much for Russian gas than it has done until now. The agreement follows Russian action to cut pipeline capacity through Ukraine on January 1, 2006. Yet the game of brinkmanship has understandably caused consternation in the EU, raising long term questions over supply.

G8 energy: all for none?

At the G8 summit in Russia, leaders once again demonstrated that these events are merely a meeting of minds, not a mechanism to create aligned policy. There was little unanimity on nuclear and it is clear that Russia, as a net exporter of gas, has different priorities.

Gazprom and E.ON are embarking upon a marriage of convenience

Russia's Gazprom and the German energy giant E.ON recently signed a memorandum of understanding on large-scale cooperation over a wide range of projects. If successful, Datamonitor's Mikhail Masokin argues this program will give each an extremely advantageous position in the energy supply value chain. Even so, a formal merger is firmly off the agenda...

Gazprom and Naftogaz: closer relationship likely

A partnership between Russia's Gazprom and Ukraine's Naftogaz, inconceivable 18 months ago, now looks likely. With Ukraine under pressure to reduce its massive budget deficit, and with Russia keen to shore up a key route to the European gas market in the face of increasing competition, some form of takeover seems imminent.

Gazprom/Petro-Canada: Baltic terminal project hints at global LNG potential

Russian gas giant Gazprom and Canadian major Petro-Canada are to proceed with construction of an LNG terminal on the Baltic Sea. Based on existing demand and infrastructure, the gas could be sold both on the North American as well as European markets. This brings arbitrage opportunities on top of long-term supply for the Canadian market, and marks a further step towards a truly global LNG market.
