Regional gas arenas are first step on long road to pan-European market

New regulatory proposals aimed at improving levels of competitive intensity in the European gas market have the potential to give a welcome, and much needed, fillip to the EU's aim of creating a single European gas market. Political fragmentation and dealings with Iran may affect the development of Iraq's energy industry

Each day, thousands of barrels of crude oil and refined products cross the border into Iran from Iraq, primarily from the semi-autonomous region of Kurdistan. The proceeds from this trade are vital to the post-Saddam reconstruction of Kurdistan, and are equally as important for Iran, where the refining industry is struggling to produce enough fuel to meet the country's rapidly growing demand.

However, refining is still a big challenge for many in the industry, and it remains to be seen whether profits so heavily dependent on fickle market prices can be sustained.

Having received approval from Sweden and Finland's respective governments, the E7.4 billion Nord Stream gas pipeline now only needs construction permits from Germany and Russia, both of which are certain to issue them. As a result, the target start date of early 2010 for the project's construction is now well within reach, meaning it is likely to begin pumping gas on schedule in 2011.

New UK gas import infrastructure should be in right hands

Interconnector UK and Isle of Grain LNG shippers are not always incentivized to import gas, as they also benefit from high gas prices on North Sea supplies. This gloomy thought may be an explanation for the gas supply problems seen this winter, but new import projects provide a more optimistic outlook for the future as the shippers operating these assets are incentivized to bring gas to the UK.
