Volkswagen [VOW.F] is to buy 50% of the Dutch fleet management company LeasePlan from ABN Amro Bank [ABN], with two other investors each likely to purchase 25%. Volkswagen stands to gain an additional 1.2 million vehicles under management. The Wolfsburg-based giant has not fared well recently but this could prove a sensible move into a lucrative sector.

As well as occupying the top spot in the European market, the division has a successful global franchised network and still has considerable scope for growth. Volkswagen might therefore be wise to take time to consider the options, after all, there appears to be no shortage of potential buyers.
