New figures released by the Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC) show that renewable energy generation in the UK increased by 20% in 2012. Manufacturing emissions were reduced, mainly due to the slow economic climate in Europe, but despite this overall UK emissions still rose by around 4.7% due to increased generation from coal power stations.

Fracking for natural gas has been regarded as a relatively low emission source of energy due to lower emissions levels from the burning of the gas compared to coal. However, leakage of methane from some natural gas fields, largely caused by fracking practices, has recently been measured at levels that eradicate these emissions benefits.
