The decision by Blacks Leisure, owner of the UK hiking & camping fascias Blacks and Millets, to take the axe to 45 stores in a bid to cut costs, is a sensible one. However, these closures could have been avoided had Blacks taken earlier action to address the fundamental challenges it faces.

Mothercare is in talks to buy Chelsea Stores, owner of the Early Learning Centre, for GBP85 million. Mothercare and the Early Learning Centre are a near perfect match in terms of customer base and Mothercare's focus on out-of-town and multi-channel expansion will accommodate an expanded product offer, which in turn will add value to its retail proposition.

JJB Sports' pre-tax profits have failed to meet City expectations, despite a 14.1% rise over the year to GBP38.5 million. The sports specialist is facing strong competition but its expanded offer and clarified brand values should help it to differentiate its position from value rivals and provide it with some insulation from price competition.

Sportswear retailers are suffering from over-supply in the market and the proliferation of discounting. Against this backdrop, JD Sports' style driven business recorded a massive increase in annual profits, enforcing the relative merits of its higher price positioning. However, there is no guarantee about how sustainable this business model is going forwards.

Blacks has blamed climate change for its lackluster performance - but this masks intensifying competition, management complacency and an over-reliance on the weather to dictate the company's fortunes. Although a number of initiatives have already been introduced to bolster the business, the management has more bases to cover if Blacks is to flourish in the long term.

UK-based car and cycle products retailer Halfords has delivered a sparkling set of results, with sales up 9.1% and like-for-like sales ahead by 6.1%. The company is adopting a multi-format expansion strategy and is poised to open its first store in the Czech Republic before 2008. This well polished operation ticks all the right boxes and, as a result, Halfords' success looks set to continue.

Mothercare's international operations are growing strongly, but its core domestic market is far more challenging. Tough competition and slow market growth has forced some strategic changes for Mothercare, including smaller stores and a major refurbishment program, which are helping it to defend its business in difficult conditions.

Sports Direct founder Mike Ashley has been dealt a series of blows since he floated the company for GBP3.00 a share in February. In just five months the shares have halved in value, with the latest drop prompted by a vague warning on prospects in the current fiscal year. This further compounds analyst concerns, particularly given the lack of like-for-like sales figures or detailed profit guidance.

There were no surprises in Carpetright's latest trading update as its aggressive UK and international store opening program delivered another round of impressive growth. Nonetheless, it has found improving like-for-like sales a more difficult task and with mounting pressure from the City, the retailer looks set to return to private hands in order to better execute its long-term strategy.

Mothercare has managed a strong performance, despite challenging domestic market conditions, with total group sales for the six months to October 13, 2007 up 23.8%. The acquired Early Learning Centre business provides additional opportunities for growth, but the real test will come over the Christmas period.
