Excluding sales at grocery multiples and over the internet, high street retail spending will shrink by over 4%, the largest drop in over 40 years. In its results for the year to April 30, 2008, which was also its first financial year as a public listed company, ethical e-retailer Adili achieved impressive sales growth of 436%, giving it total sales of GBP354,000. However, the retailer also made a loss of GBP1.59m, which means that it will need to prioritize profitability without reducing key investments.

Asda has had a good 2007 to date, at least matching rivals Tesco and Sainsbury in terms of sales growth. Total growth in the 'mid single digits' has been driven by like-for-like growth, as well as new space. While we view its performance positively, Asda must increase its efforts further in order to continue to prosper.

ASOS has kept this performance going since its financial year end, with sales for the seven weeks to November 16 up by 104%.
