In a difficult retail market, the UK's largest retailer has delivered on each of the four components of its strategy, reporting group sales growth of 10.3% (excluding petrol). Tesco: under further fire

Sainsbury, Asda and Morrison have appealed to the Competition Commission (CC) to slow the growth of Tesco, claiming the retailer will see its share of the food and grocery market reach 43% by 2010 if left unabated. But given the retailer's increasing focus on non-food, this seems a challenge too far - even for Tesco.

J Sainsbury: recovery on track

Sainsbury's second quarter announcement of 8% total sales uplift (excluding petrol), including a 6.6% like-for-like improvement, marks the seventh consecutive period of growth for the retailer and suggests Justin King's recovery plan is firmly on track. But with Tesco continuing to storm ahead and Asda and Morrison both trading significantly better, Sainsbury needs to remain on top of its game.
