Invensys will have to write down part of the $715 million it paid for Dutch ERP vendor Baan. The business has failed to make progress in a difficult market and appears to be losing market share. Unless Invensys can turn the company around quickly, it will be under heavy pressure to sell it.

Logica/CMG: not messaging but drowning

Although merging is a good move for Logica and CMG, its only effect will be to cut costs; LogicaCMG will struggle in MMS just as much as its predecessors did. It seems strange that two established IT firms have invested so much in building mobile infrastructure businesses that - even before MMS launched - seemed to have limited long term potential.

ABN Amro/EDS: outsourcing bandwagon starts rolling

ABN Amro looks set to outsource all IT services for its Wholesale Clients unit to EDS. The deal, worth at least $1.46 billion, will be one of the largest ever IT outsourcing deals in the banking industry. Atol/KPMG: it's all about upsell

Atol has pipped KMPG Consulting US to the post, acquiring KPMG's Dutch and UK consultancy arms for $610 million. The downturn has left tech firms searching for new revenue streams, and Atol believes KPMG is the solution. Although the units are not cheap, the deal should allow Atol to broaden the range of services it offers clients and therefore boost profits.
