Basic consolidates after a tough year

With annual sales just about holding up, organics retailer Basic's margins have come under pressure. As a consequence, expansion plans have been put on hold, and the company has announced job cuts, reducing its staff headcount from 850 to 780. The outlook is bleak as even the buoyant organic sector will not prove completely immune to the expected downturn in consumer expenditure.

Once the integration of the Wal-Mart stores in Germany is completed, Metro's domestic outlook should improve.

Metro: slavering over the Croatian market

The retailer has taken yet another international step by moving into Croatia. Metro's international expansion policy, funded by divesting many of its non-cash and carry operations, is bolder than that of many of other food retailers. It seems to be paying off. In developed and less developed markets, Metro is going from strength to strength.
