Nuclear giants eying up much greater slice of wind market

According to newspaper Les Echos, the French nuclear reactor maker Areva and utility GDF SUEZ are shortly set to announce a partnership in offshore wind energy, following a similar agreement between Alstom and EDF Energies Nouvelles. Datamonitor believes market consolidation in the area of offshore wind is set to intensify, as the larger players seek to grow their market shares.

ITER: energy for the next generation

France has been selected as the site for the International Thermonuclear Experiment Reactor (ITER) after successfully bidding against a number of contenders. The project's goal is to build the first fusion reactor in the world to have a net output of energy, paving the way for the commercialization of nuclear energy significantly cleaner than current fission technology.

G8 energy: all for none?

At the G8 summit in Russia, leaders once again demonstrated that these events are merely a meeting of minds, not a mechanism to create aligned policy. There was little unanimity on nuclear and it is clear that Russia, as a net exporter of gas, has different priorities.

French government to tap potential for renewable energy

France has unveiled a new renewable energy investment program which will see its government provide E1.35 billion to support the development of cutting-edge clean energy technologies. Datamonitor feels that this may help chart a new developmental roadmap for the French energy industry, which has until now focused primarily on nuclear energy.

France: stepping into offshore wind energy and strengthening its nuclear presence

Following the announcement in June that France plans to invest E1bn in nuclear power, the government has launched a E10bn tender offer to build five offshore wind farms with total installed capacity of 3GW. Should the initiative be successful France will be the foremost contributor to offshore wind power globally, helping it to achieve its EU 2020 target of 23% renewable energy.

France: seeking to kick-start its wind industry

A power-rich country, France has for years depended upon its strong portfolio of nuclear reactors. Long-sighted as this technology is, nuclear power is not deemed to be green energy and contributes in no way to France's renewable energy targets as set by the EU. As such, a bid to comprehensively enter the wind power market with 6GW of installed capacity will have numerous interesting consequences.

France's offshore wind power tenders bring more FDI opportunity

The French government has launched its second public tender for the construction of two circa-500MW capacity offshore wind farms, with an expected total investment of EUR3.35bn. The tender comes in the context of small but growing anti-nuclear sentiment, as well as the need to replace aging nuclear capacity and meet its 25GW wind power target by 2020.

France is catching up in the Europe wind-power stakes, but does it all make sense?

France, which has the third largest wind resource in Europe after Germany and the UK, has launched a tender for E10 billion of offshore wind investment. In attempting to meet its renewable and offshore wind power targets, France risks increasing both the levelized cost of power generation and power sector emission levels, while boosting its dependency on imported fossil fuels.

Europe's pending power dilemma

A number of factors have placed Europe's power market into uncertainty. These include Germany's decision to exit nuclear power by 2022, and a "not in my backyard" attitude to carbon capture and storage. Moreover, there are also issues with wind power and natural gas, while aging plants and drought are further adding to a problem to which there appears to be no clear solution.

EU wind power: new sources needed

The European Wind Energy Association has predicted that the wind power sector could provide 12% to 15% of European power demand by 2020. Although this represents a fivefold increase on current levels, the EU may need to look beyond the high-growth markets of Germany and Spain to find new wind power potential to help the region meet its renewables quota of 21% by 2020.
