Danish forecourts: shopping is key as sites disappear

One of Denmark's leading players, DK Benzin, has testified to the dramatic transformation of the fuel retailing market by predicting hundreds of sites will shut by 2007. In the aftermath of fierce price wars, and the government's support of decommissioning sites, closures seem inevitable. However, fuel retailers will now have the opportunity to focus their efforts on developing forecourt shops.

Dong: privatization on the horizon

Dong, the leading gas and power producer in Denmark with an installed capacity of 5.9GW, is slated to be partially de-nationalized and become a listed company in 2007. However, the company's Achilles' heel may be that it is relying on its vertically integrated structure as a competitive advantage at a time when Brussels is seeking to break up integrated utilities to stimulate competition.

Elsam: shareholders deliberate the perfect fit

Elsam's board has spurned Vattenfall and thrown its weight behind a rival offer from the Danish state-owned DONG. If successful, this new entity would deliver on the government's desire to produce a national energy champion. However, shareholders are perhaps rightly unconvinced of the benefits of combining an integrated power utility and an upstream oil and gas company.

Elsam: which suitor suits?

Danish-based Elsam is considering potential partners for a merger deal. If the company does not want to be subsumed into Vattenfall, it is right to consider combining with Copenhagen Energy. Shell's unmanned Denmark strategy makes sense

Shell is to rename the 70 unmanned Metax petrol stations in Denmark Shell Express, committing itself to its automatic site format. This could prove a shrewd move as not only do unmanned sites significantly reduce the time it takes customers to fill their vehicle, but they provide an efficient alternative for over four in 10 of European motorists who visit petrol stations shops but only buy fuel.
