A bid could be feasible. Austria is a gap in Vodafone's coverage, and Telekom Austria's mobile operations are large enough that Vodafone might be interested. However, now is not the time for Telekom shareholders to get excited. Austria is not a strategic priority for Vodafone, and the UK firm is currently focusing on countries where it already has a presence.

Last year Verbund, Austria's largest generator and the owner of the national high-voltage network, and EnergieAllianz, an alliance of six regional utilities, signed a merger agreement. Regulatory bodies might be right to interfere, as the new entity would totally dominate the Austrian market.

T-Online's German business made an ebitda profit, and the whole operation looks set to break even in 2002. However, the company could do with re-evaluating its presence in non-German language markets. Its French and Spanish operations are losing money and market share; it may need to decide between selling them and investing heavily to boost its presence.

Austria's OMV is now a leading fuel retailer in Central and Eastern Europe, and the largest international retailer in Hungary and Slovakia. Not only is the company driving up fuel sales per site by acquiring sites with higher throughputs, but its new acquisitions will also enable the expansion of the non-fuel business at its service stations.

While the news might spread some light in a gloomy sector, it is far from a clean bill of health for mPortals in general. Sms.at is a small portal based around SMS, which is the most successful area of the mobile data market. It is also targeted at older users, making billing more feasible. Other operators might do well to follow some of its traits.
