DoCoMo has returned to profitability, but its main rival KDDI has leapt ahead in the 3G subscriber race. DoCoMo has just 330,000 subscribers compared to KDDI's 7.5 million. Also worrying are DoCoMo's low expectations for revenue growth, as increased spending on data services seems to be coming at the expense of conventional calls.

NTT DoCoMo is to trial a credit card linked mobile payment service in June. However, it may be found that the new payment system fails to present a strong enough business case. Conversely, there seems to be much more room for success in the micro-payments market. Yet even that niche will prove difficult to crack.
Vodafone has confirmed it is in talks to sell its Japanese fixed line business. A sale would allow Vodafone to focus its energies on its 3G mobile phone operations, which are currently available in Japan and due to roll out into other countries later this year.

The ATM sector is hot at the moment, with a number of interesting developments taking place across the world. DoCoMo's plan to integrate mobile phones and ATMs aims to capitalize upon the high levels of usage of mobile technologies in Japan. Japan may well be a test case for the rest of the world.

The fast food giant is said to have signed a deal with Internet company Softbank to install wireless network links in nearly 4,000 of its restaurants. However, while it is increasingly popular for cafes and restaurants to offer Internet services, the trend looks unlikely to spread to McDonald's outlets in Europe.

The lower subscriber figures don't matter too much, as Vodafone's focus is now on boosting average revenue per user (ARPU). Unfortunately, 12-month ARPU figures were also down. Data revenues were up, which Vodafone believes will allow it to raise ARPU going ahead. However, the challenge will be in migrating users from SMS to higher-value messaging services.

While i-mode is being hailed as the 'second coming' for European mobile data services, various obstacles may deter its uptake. In particular, KPN is not rolling out a pay-as-you-go service - instead, it requires a subscription. This is likely to deter young users, whose viral marketing has been one of the factors driving the service's Japanese success.

DoCoMo is to increase its 3G network faster than first planned. This decision contrasts with many European operators which are holding back 3G investment following questions over its commercial viability. DoCoMo does not seem to share these concerns. The strategy could be risky if subscription rates remain sluggish, but it will increase its advantage over rivals.

The deal will allow the two companies to cut the cost of 3G development. But while both firms will certainly benefit, the advantages will be short lived as other manufacturers follow suit. Consolidation in this industry seems inevitable and companies trying to 'go it alone' will find the market an increasingly difficult place to survive.
