AstraZeneca: Iressa safety fears threaten sales

The Japanese health ministry has linked AstraZeneca's lung cancer drug Iressa with 81 patient deaths. Although there appears to be little chance of the news affecting the forthcoming European and US regulators' decisions on the drug and no danger of an immediate Japanese withdrawal, it could mean slower clinician uptake for Iressa.<BR />

AstraZeneca: safety concerns delay Iressa decision

Hopes seemed high for AstraZeneca's Iressa when Japanese authorities granted the drug approval last July, making it the first anti-angiogenic to hit the market. Now, however, concerns emerging from Japan have caused the US to delay its approval pending a reassessment of the safety data. While Iressa should gain approval eventually, sales are likely to be hit hard.
