With consumers showing more interest in the origin of their foods, it comes as little surprise that one manufacturer has released what it claims is the first slave-free chocolate bar. Like the fair-trade movement, the product aims to give workers a fairer wage for their efforts; however, it is possible that the anti-slavery claims will have a greater impact on consumers.
Cadbury Schweppes is following an increasing trend among consumer products companies for undertaking ethical and green initiatives. Cadbury's pledge to invest substantial sums in cocoa farming in Ghana is just one of numerous initiatives which the company has introduced, as it strives to improve its image following the salmonella outbreak in 2006.
