Africa has abundant reserves of oil and gas, yet until recently few companies have dared to explore the continent's resources. Unstable politics, high operational costs and challenging corporate governance issues have discouraged most, although a few private companies have managed to overcome these obstacles. Repsol however is one of the first majors to expand its license portfolio to West Africa.

Africa is one of the few regions in the world where significant oil and gas reserves remain underexplored and access remains relatively viable. Not surprisingly, different international players, both major and second-tier, have the region as a strategic option as reserves in other locations experience either depletion or cannot be developed due to political or regulatory impediments.

The death toll from the Marburg virus has now risen to 117 in Angola making it the most serious such outbreak recorded. Although the Ebola-like virus has no vaccine or curative treatment and can be rapidly fatal, news of the outbreak should serve to focus attention back on the sometimes-neglected area of tropical disease management.

Driven by its natural resources, Africa's economic growth is attracting investments by logistics players such as DHL as they look to develop infrastructure and services across the continent. However, many fundamental issues still need to be addressed, such as the lack of infrastructure and the geopolitical risks.
