The South African wealth market is the largest in the Middle East and Africa, accounting for nearly 36% of the region's total value of liquid assets held by affluent individuals in 2011. South Africa is, however, forecasted to have the lowest growth prospects in the region, and will see its market value rise to only $265bn by 2015.

Julius Baer has agreed to acquire Merrill Lynch's non-US wealth management operations from Bank of America. The deal is sizable, seeing Julius Baer boost AUM by around 40%, and could see it edge into the top 10 largest wealth managers globally. Despite the divestment, Bank of America is set to remain as the third largest wealth manager in the world, thanks to its significant US operations.

Geneva-based Altaira Wealth Management has set up an office in Bahrain, hoping to entice wealthy Middle Eastern clients with its Swiss asset management offering. Altaira follows other wealth managers like Falcon Private Bank in offering Swiss expertise to these consumers, but with local competition increasing, foreign entrants may struggle in the region.
