JD Wetherspoons: smoking ban blamed for declining sales

UK pub chain JD Wetherspoons has posted a 3.2% drop in sales for the 11 week period ended January 11, 2008. The smoking ban has been cited as the main cause of the drop, however, on-trade sales of beer have been in decline for a number of years, as the off-trade sector continues to grow. With many consumers switching to the off-trade, the on-trade sector will need to evolve in order to grow sales.
