Home furnishings retailer Dunelm Mill has enjoyed a solid first half of trading, reporting an increase of 10.6% in total sales and a 4.9% increase in like-for-like sales. Though there is much potential for new space in the coming years, continuing strong like-for-like uplifts could prove more challenging.

Dunelm has posted a robust set of results for the 26 weeks to December 27, 2008, with like-for-like performance plummeting 5.6%, but overall sales growth at a respectable 2.3%. Tight cost management and a strong value proposition have undoubtedly been major factors in this strong performance, but it is new stores which have made the crucial difference - and will continue to do so in 2009.

UK consumers are shunning laminate flooring in favor of woven alternatives, leaving Floors 2 Go in a precarious position. But Floors 2 Go has also built a reputation in the more promising segment of wood floors, leaving the retailer well placed to turn around its fortunes.

Floors-2-Go has entered administration, becoming the latest victim of the consumer downturn. After struggling against the expansion of the non-specialists and the extremely hostile trading conditions facing big ticket retailers, particularly those related to the housing market, Floors-2-Go has become the 35th retailer, and the 12th housing-related retailer, to succumb to the pressure this year.

Apax Partners' proposal for a possible merger between Focus, the DIY retailer in which it has a 30% stake, and the retail arm of MFI for which it is currently bidding, is doomed to failure. While both retailers share similar difficulties, a viable retailer will not be created by joining the companies.

Despite a looming economic downturn, furniture & floorcoverings retailers have enjoyed a rise in sales in 2007, according to the latest report by Verdict Research. The retail analysts estimate that the UK furniture & floorcoverings market will grow at its fastest pace for three years in 2007. However, stripping out the sales boost from higher inflation, year-on-year volume growth will be lower.

Gruppo Coin has cemented its position as Italy's leading clothing retailer with its acquisition of department store chain Upim. The deal will provide a significant boost to the group's turnover, which combined with the ongoing revitalization and international expansion of its fast-fashion chain OVS, should help sales breach the E2 billion mark in the next three years.

With like-for-like growth at 5.5% for the nine months to August 31, the recent move into China on track, and more store openings due for the fourth quarter, the outlook for fashion retailer H&M should be bright. However, the delay in introducing its dedicated homewares offer means the Swedish retailer is falling further behind its main competitor Inditex.

Although H&M's Q2 and H1 trading results showed impressive profit growth and an extremely high profit margin, like-for-like sales were badly hit over the spring. Moreover, its exposure to currency fluctuations and relatively long stock rotation period mean that H&M will be heavily impacted by dampened consumer spend in H2. As such, continued aggressive expansion will remain its key strategy.
